The UIN Sunan Kalijaga Library, located in Yogyakarta, is a crucial source of learning and intellectual resources for the academic community. It plays a vital role in supporting the three pillars of higher education (Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi). The library serves as both a resource hub and an information center.
The establishment of the UIN Sunan Kalijaga Library is closely intertwined with its parent institution, the State Islamic Institute (PTAIN). PTAIN was founded on September 26, 1951, based on Government Regulation No. 34 of 1950. Subsequently, on August 24, 1960, PTAIN Yogyakarta merged with the Academy of Religious Affairs (ADIA) in Jakarta to become the State Islamic Institute (IAIN), known as al-Jami’ah al-Islamiyah al-Hukumiyah, in Yogyakarta. Over time, IAIN Sunan Kalijaga transformed into UIN Sunan Kalijaga on October 14, 2004, following Presidential Decree No. 50 of 2004.
In line with the historical development of UIN Sunan Kalijaga, the library’s status improved significantly, especially after the implementation of the Minister of Religious Affairs Decree No. 14 of 1988. According to this regulation, the library’s structural position shifted from being under the Institute Secretary to becoming the Technical Implementation Unit (UPT) directly under the Rector.
